Differential lockers
Three designs, one job: tie the half-shafts together so the wheel with grip gets the torque. They differ in what else has to go into the vehicle, and in where each works best.
Air, electric or Crab
The manufacturer gives one hint outright and we repeat it verbatim: it recommends the electric locker where it is cold and the air locker where it is hot.
Air
Closed by compressed air. Needs a compressor and lines. In return, one compressor serves two lockers and still inflates your tyres.
Electric (e-locker)
Closed by an electromagnet. Simpler to fit, with no air plumbing. It unlocks when you change direction and re-locks after about a quarter of a wheel turn.
Crab Locker
No seal housing — the most common failure of air lockers disappears. The manufacturer tested it for five years on eighteen vehicles. It costs more.
A manufacturer warning that must not be skipped: the electric locker's automatic release on a change of direction „may be dangerous” in the mountains, when manoeuvring on a climb. If you drive steep ground and change direction often, that argues for the air locker.
What TRE changed inside
Three features the manufacturer claims as its own, and which set its lockers apart from the simplest designs on the market.

X-Ring instead of an O-ring
A four-lobed seal rather than a round section — the manufacturer states twice the sealing surface of a standard O-ring.
Wave spring
Halves the spring height compared with a conventional coil, so the pockets in the clutch gear are shallower and the gear itself stronger.
Deeper engagement
On the electric version and the Crab Locker the locking depth went from the usual 2 mm to 5 mm. Gears in 4320 chromoly steel, nickel-plated on the electric version.

Frequently asked questions
Does a locker change how the vehicle handles on the road?
Engaged, yes — a great deal. A locked differential does not let the wheels turn at different speeds, so the vehicle resists steering, and on hard surfaces a locked front axle can pull straight ahead despite the wheel being turned.
That is why you engage a locker off-road and disengage it afterwards. Disengaged it does nothing — the differential works exactly as it did from the factory.
Front or rear, if the budget only stretches to one?
Usually the rear — that is where most of the torque goes, and a locked rear axle does not spoil steering the way a front one does. The front gives more in the hardest going but is also more awkward when manoeuvring.
It does depend on the vehicle and on where you drive. Tell us how you use the truck and we will answer for your case rather than repeat the rule.
What does fitting involve?
A locker replaces the differential, so the axle has to come apart and be set up again on reassembly — backlash and contact pattern included. This is not a driveway job.
An air locker adds the air system: compressor, lines and a feed into the axle through a rotating seal in the hub. We do this in our workshop in Warsaw — write to us and we will book a date.
Does the warranty cover damage after locking on tarmac?
No. The manufacturer explicitly excludes gear damage caused by improper use, and driving on a hard surface with the locker engaged is the textbook example of that.
The warranty on lockers themselves is 5 years — the longest in the whole TRE range.
Tell us your axle
The axle type and spline count decide everything. If you do not know them, send the VIN and a photo of the differential cover and we will work it out.
