A compressor in an off-road vehicle does two jobs: it closes the air lockers and reinflates the tyres when you come off the trail. The second happens more often than the first.
You let the air out, so you have to put it back
Dropping tyre pressure is the cheapest way to gain grip in sand and on rock — the contact patch grows and the tyre wraps around obstacles. The problem starts when you rejoin the road: you must not drive fast on soft tyres.
Output
The twin Black Air delivers 178 l/min. For its twin-cylinder design the manufacturer states 150 l/min at 150 psi, a 540 W 12 V motor and up to 50 A draw.
Tank
A 4 l aluminium tank stores air so a locker closes instantly and the compressor does not start on every use.
Manifold
One compressor serves the front and rear lockers — you do not need two. That is a real saving when equipping both axles.
With an air locker the compressor is not an accessory. Without it the locker has nothing to close with. When budgeting for an air locker, count the compressor and lines from the start.
